CALST Co-study Group on Advanced Learning Science and Technology

CALST runs on regular conversation: research presentations, group readings, and check-ins on whatever each of us is working on. The weekly meeting is the heart of all of this — what members come to think of as “another lab.”

At a glance

  • Time — Thursdays, 19:00–21:00 (JST, GMT+9)
  • Place — Online, on Discord
  • Format — Two or three member presentations with Q&A, themed group readings, and open discussion

The schedule above is in effect for the first half of academic year 2026; we may adjust it between terms.

How to take part

CALST values long-term participation, but you don’t need to commit on day one. Whether you’d like to “see if it’s a fit” or “really sink in,” there are three ways to engage with us.

1. Visit first

If you’d like to get a feel for the meeting and see whether your research interests align with ours, you’re welcome to sit in as a guest for one or two sessions — no commitment required.

Please reach out via the Contact page with a short self-introduction and a note that you’d like to visit. We’ll send you a Discord invite for the day.

2. Join as a member

Once you decide you’d like to keep showing up, you can join as a full member. Members participate through three platforms:

  • Mailing list — for announcements
  • Discord — for meetings and informal discussion
  • Notion — for minutes and shared materials

Please reach out via the Contact page with a short self-introduction and a note that you intend to participate on an ongoing basis.

3. By referral

If you’d like to join through a recommendation from a current member, please ask that member to contact the executive committee directly.

Who can take part

CALST has no age limit, but is intended for those committed to active engagement in research and discussion.

  • Undergraduate and master’s students — Those considering a doctoral path, with their advisor’s approval and a real motivation for research and dialogue
  • Doctoral students — With advisor approval, and prepared for ongoing engagement with the community
  • Researchers (academia or industry) — Active researchers contributing in pursuit of internationally meaningful work

A final note

CALST is a place to bring questions, push each other’s thinking, and grow together over time. If you take learning and research seriously and want to keep showing up, we’d love to have you.

Let’s build “another lab” together.
